About your Passport:

Your passport is a valuable document. It should always be either in your own custody or in the custody of a person duly authorized by you. It must not be altered, mutilated or tampered with in any manner. If lost or damaged, the fact and circumstances should be immediately reported to the nearest Indian Mission and to the local police.

It is an offence under the Passports Act, 1967 to give false information in the application for any service related to Indian passports. Passport facilities can be denied on grounds of suppression of factual information, submission of false particulars; willful damage of passport and for making un authorized changes in the passport.

Passports - Online Registration Form.

The Government of India has now introduced the Online Registration Form for all overseas Indian nationals seeking Passport Services. The procedure would now enable the Indian nationals residing overseas to obtain Printed Passports dispatched from.

1. Click the link below to complete the form online (see selection criteria for Indian mission on the online form as per the screen shot example below )
2. Online Link https://passport.gov.in/nri/OnlineRegistration.jsp
3. Note the registration number for future use.
   
4. Print out the form.
   
5. Sign in all boxes as required, within the box.
   
6. You should have 2 forms now a) Online form printed and b) FORM U

Please provide recent photographs (not more than 6 months old)

The photographs should be in color and strictly as per the specifications below.

• Taken against a light colored (NOT WHITE) background so that features are distinguishable and in contrast against the background. Printed on photographic paper.
  
• Frame Subject with Full Face, Front view, Eyes open.
  
• Should show full face (without sunglasses and normally without a hat or cap). Head coverings are not permitted except for Religious reasons, but the facial features from bottom of chin to top of forehead and both edges of the face must be clearly shown.
  
• The face should be in the middle of the frame.
  
• Ensure no distracting shadows on the face or background.
  Un-mounted - 2 inch x 2 inch in size. - VISA applications only. (One copy for each application in most visa cases. Exceptions apply-please see details for same under your selected visa type)
  Un-mounted - 2 inch x 2 inch in size - OCI applications only. (Two Copies for each application)

1. Why does it take minimum 45 days for issue of a fresh passport in place of an expired one?
   Issue of a fresh passport in lieu of an expired one takes a minimum of 45 days as reference to original passport issuing authorities needs to be made for verification of particulars/antecedents etc. See processing times for more details
   
   
2. When to renew the passport and when to apply for a new passport?
   An Indian passport is normally valid for 10 years from the date of its issue. It must be replaced with a fresh passport after expiry of its validity. Application for a fresh passport can be made up to one year before the date of expiry of the present passport. It is always better to apply well in time. Similarly, if your passport is due to expire but has not lived its life of 10 years you should apply well in time for its renewal.
   
   
3. The lamination on my passport has peeled off, is my passport ok to travel?
   If the lamination of your passport has peeled off, the passport is considered to be damaged. You will need to apply for a fresh booklet ( passport) under the damaged category.
   
   
4. I want to apply for my passport but I also need to travel abroad for 2 weeks, can I submit my passport later?
   You will need to submit your original passport at the time of lodging your application; however you can apply for an interim withdrawal of your passport and submit your passport on arrival to complete the processing of your application.
